Extracts from Bhagavad Geeta :
These extracts are collected from the Book “ The Holy Geeta – commentaries by Sri. Chinmayananda”. The page numbers e.g, p161 etc indicate the same pages in which those passages or explanations appear.
Kauravas : 100 in Number; Ungodly forces of negative tendencies in man’s bosom
Mind is born blinded to Truthwedded to an Intellect-has assumed blindness ( like Gandhari & Dhritharashtra)
Geeta = 701 stanzas
Maharathi = in charge of 11000 archers
Total effectiveness of 5 > & better equipped than kauravas.
Twice born = Once from mother’s womb. 2nd time thro’ study & contemplation as a cultured Hindu, called Brahmana.
Conch = War bugle to send forth roaring confidence into the hearts.
Hrishi + kesa = Lord of the senses.
p.25 Pritha = another name of Kunthi
Sin = mistake committed by misunderstood ego.
p.28. No element can destroy another element subtler than itself. I.e. Atma can not be killed
p.160 Man will fall in 2 paths .
1) Active - Path of Action = Karma Yoga, selfless activity gives mind a chance to exhaust all vasanas. 2. Contemplative - Path of Knowledge = Jnana Yoga
Thus purified mind gains such a flight that it can steadily soar into the subtlest realms of meditation and finally come to gain the Experience of Transcendental Absolute.
Ignorance functions in Intellect & expresses itself as Desires.
Desires function in mental zone & expresses itself as Thoughts.
Thoughts function in Outer world & expresses itself as Actions.
Supreme is beyond every thing.
All activities other than Yagna activities bring Vasana bondages & the individual’s ultimate Development & strength will be arrested.
For men of Wisdom, all pairs of opposites are to the mind only not him.
The discriminative capacity in us gets screened off by insatiable desires.
96. The Westerners inspiration is an accidental and mysterious happening over which mortal has no control at all. According to Rishis, inspired Living is the real godly destiny of man when he lives in perfect unison with the self in him. Ordinary success beam into inspired Achievement.
p-91. Equanimity in all mental challenges is a factor that ensure true success in all . i.e. keep the mind open for its flow; it should not get clouded by ego sense.
p-100. Hindu religion is 5000 years B.C i.e. 7000 years from now.
Mental impressions can not themselves bring any disaster or or reward unless they are connected with the external world i.e., thro’ the needle point of our ego centre.
p-101. Ritualistic acts: If unfinished – then no fruits; if done not fruitfully--à Sin.( like wring medicine)
But, these 2 dangers are not in Karma yoga .
p-104. Ritualistic portion of Vedas is the means and the Vedantic portion of Vedas is the end. (i.e., Realization thro’ meditation is the end).
Avoid inward dissipation of or wastage of mental energy. Bring the Best in you and forget yourself in the activity. Don’t dream of fruits.
Wrong imagination, False expectation, Fruits of action, Anxieties for results, fears of future calamities- are all nerve racking mistakes belong to ego.
When the Thought flow is in a state of flux or agitated , it is called mind; when it is single pointed, calm and serene in its own determination, it is called Intellect.
So, Buddhi Yoga means ‘ to be established in the devotion to the Intellect’ The objective mind working under the control of Subjective mind is called Buddhi Yoga.
Once the Intellect in us is purified thro’ the Art of steady work called devotion thro’ work it is possible to peep to Reality.
p-125.Intellect is contaminated by ignorance . Thro’ Right Knowledge it can become desire less.
Burning desire for sense objects; Blinding attachment with emotions and Jealous preference for one’s pet ideas.
Chariot has 5 horses = 5 senses
Exalted in pleasure and dejected in pain.
6 common things for all : Birth, Existence, growth, disease, decay, death.

Yoga sasthra, capacity to withdraw senses at Will from the fields of Objects is Pratyahara accomplished thro’ Pranayama.
Learn to live in self control and train to live among sense objects with the least attachment and aversion for them.
Quotient of Happiness = No.of desires fulfilled / No.of desires entertained.
Meditation is the path in which the ego learns to withdraw the false evaluation of itself.
Ignorance causes desires ; desires are seeds from which actions arise.
Evolution falls in 3 stages :
1. Desire prompted activity
2. Selfless dedicated activity
3. Quiet meditation
p-297. Karma yoga + meditation --à soon Self-Realization
Karma yoga accomplishes purification of Intellect ; so better state of Quietitude
Mind reflects the condition of Intellect ; so it can’t have disturbance, So, Tame & equanimous.
Karma yoga --à inward peace. So very easy to guide his sense organs and appetites. Therefore once yogin controlled his BMI he is fit for the highest meditation.
p-303. A doctor won’t operate his wife because of his attachment
Ego thrives in the BMI. With the end of ignorance ego also ends. Ego = Jiva
When the ego discovers the self it becomes the Self- Atma.
Only when we are in contact with the world of objects, we suffer the agitation in life otherwise object can not by itself bring any disturbances like waves can not do any harm to us if we are in the banks. Only when we are in the sea we will be tossed hither & thither.
Ch-2/58. In ach individual 5 distinct beams of same awareness or Conscious light protrude like antennae and give him complete Knowledge.
According to west ‘to control’ is to suppress. Suppressing is psychologically not healthy. But Vedic theory says it is not suppression. It is an inward blossoming, inner growth and Development by which one’s earlier fields of enjoyment thro’ senses drop out to make room for the perception of ample joys and more satisfying Bliss.
Attachment causes burning desire
Any obstruction to this desire shoos him to Anger
He forgets his sense of proportion relatively between things and beings.
He loses his discrimination capacity ( Buddhi) which leads to complete destruction.
Sobs, sighs and sorrows.
Joy created thro’ satisfaction of desires can never be complete.
Sanyasa = renouncing all desires and ego.
Study of scriptures under a master

Path of Action : Activity to get detached from Desire, Fear and Anger.
Path of Love : by taking refuge in the Self.
Path of knowledge : discriminative analysis and constant attempts in the identification of the Self. ( Jnana Tapas.)
These 3 paths are the 3 techniques to perfect & purify our mind and to make it single pointed because there are 3 types of men. Some identify with Body, -- Mind, -- Intellect .
p-231. Car petrol drives to death or destination.
Ignorance of BMI splits into spectrum; Ego less Godman finds every thing as God.
p-340- To bring mind under control is similar to getting on a wild horse and riding. It is v.difficult. It is Yoga Arudha. Mounted steed of the mind.
p-341- Selfless activity is good for a beginner. Developed seeker needs more quietitude. First , work w/o self is the means and then work on the self is the means.

Meditation : Sitting single pointed ness is achieved by 1- subduing mental imagination and 2- controlling wild activities of the sense organs.
For what? For inner purification only. I.e., agitations in mind are its impurities.
p-361- Fisher woman can not sleep in a flower shop until a Fish basket is kept near her nose.i.e., Ego does not believe that there is an Existence Supreme.
p-344- An external source will constantly help a true seeker striving on his path but it is really healthy only when his Thought is complemented with sufficiently intense self efforts.
p-364- When one is steadfast in his physical and subtler life, he releases from himself a large qty of psychic vitality.
At the peak of meditation , the seeker comes to a perfect halt.
Concordant x Discordant
Sleep = Non-apprehension of reality ; Dream = Mis-apprehension of reality.
Desires are not unhealthy – they can not bring us sad; but disproportionate amount of clinging to our desires is the cancer of our mind which brings agonies in life. Ie., Longing after desires is bad.
The infinite Bliss transcends the senses ( anti indhriya ). The Bliss of self recognition is permissible only thro’ pure Intellect & not by the senses.
Once established, this Transcendental Bliss never departs from the seeker.
p-312- Detachment Yoga = Technique of withdrawing the mind from the objects by lifting it to planes of higher contemplation.
